Various Production feat. Pumajaw - Buds (remix)

Discovered this gem on the new mixtape from Matt Shadetek and DJ Rupture, who are the production team behind Jahdan Blakkamore (for more on that seach below). Make sure your speakers are on for this, Various has built some serious head-nod appeal right here and coupled with Pumajaw's haunting vocals, they've created a monster.

Wu Tang Meets Indie Culture Vol. 2 - ENTER THE DUBSTEP

Stumbled across this by accident, it's apparently set for release November 10. Click here and scroll down for previews, I'm listening as I write and oh man is it heavy.
Press release:
“As Vol. 1 sought to introduce hip-hop fans in general, and specifically, the famously large, loyal and diverse fan-base of the Wu-Tang to the burgeoning world of underground hip-hop, so Vol. 2 seeks to expose another untapped resource of underground talent, skill and artistry to this very same avid and intrepid fan-base.

The project serves a double purpose as well: many of the pioneers and practitioners (DJ’s and producers) in the Dubstep world came up in a time when Wu-Tang ruled the international airwaves. Unlike much commercial hip-hop, the immediacy of Wu-Tang’s sound spoke to many outside of the scope of the typical hip-hop fan, across oceans and at home. Their music and style helped to shape an emerging artform that hadn’t yet defined itself. Now, in 2009, as dubstep continues to grow, expand and encompass more styles and subgenres, the Wu-Tang sound is reintroduced into the mix, to spawn a new and unique musical crossbreeding, that is greater than the sum of its constituent parts.

This groundbreaking album is trail-blazing the collaboration between Dubstep and Hip-Hop, with stomach-pounding, bass-thumping guttural beats, and gully, gritty and grimy lyrics that break into the next decade in the chapters of each respective genre’s history.”

NEW Dot Rotten - Two Step Non Stop (video)

Some heat from one of the major dons of the grime scene. R.I.P. Young Dot proved to be one of those rare grime releases that I found worth revisiting after it's release (nothing against grime releases, there's just so many and so few of them turn out to be memorable), so keep watching for Something Out Of Nothing dropping November 2 on his own Rotten Riddims Entertainment imprint.

GOOD NEWS FOR SYDNEY MUSIC HEADS OF ALL TYPES

As of Monday, cafes, restaurants, pubs and clubs in NSW will no longer need a Place of Public Entertainment (POPE) licence to host live music. The POPE licence was widely regarded as out of reach for most venue owners because of the costs of the building upgrades required to meet standards. I don't want to speak too soon, but this may be what's needed to give Sydney's nightlife the kick in the pants it needs. I know there are many who think of the music scene here as a bit of a joke for a city this size, and I'll admit it does seem that despite being twice the size of Melbourne, we only seem to have about half their variety of after-hours music options. This new move will hopefully encourage more venues to open and provide more support for local talent. Now all we need is to scrap this 2am lockout joke.

Foreign beggars & Noisia - Contact

First single from the forthcoming United Colours of Beggattron to be released on the 19th of this month. Production by Noisia, who are twisted trust me, just wait till it gets to the end of the track and they transorm it into some messy drum n bass.

New Grems - Dimanche EP

This is the title track from the Dimanche EP, which has just dropped as a teaser before the release of the album Broka Billy. This is produced by NT4 and Jonn 9000, you may remember NT4 as the other MC with Grems on DJ Troubl's "Guedin" (whick also features on this EP, see below to listen). Cop the EP here, and stay tuned for more.

JAHDAN BLAkKAMORE - BUZZROCK WARRIOR

New release from Brooklyn-based dancehall exponent Jahdan, featuring more than a couple overt nods toward the dubstep and grime movements. Highlights include a colab with DKTV's long-time favorite Durrty Goodz on "Mesmerized" and some monstrous gangster-dub on "The General". If that's not enough convincing then check out boomkat for more details, previews of the tracks and the digital release itself.

NEW GREMS!!! THIS IS BIG

One of the hottest, most innovative and most versatile spitters in France, Grems, and the ever-present DJ Troubl (2-time world champion, I just read), have been making very conspicuous moves toward dubstep and grime (not to mention funky house, which actally made me like funky house) ever since I've known of them. Grems is probably best knows outside of France for his collaboration with Orifice Vulgatron (Foreign Beggars), as one half of Rouge à Lèvre on the track "Gash." I'd probably have to say I'd rate him in my top 3 or 4 MCs at the moment (seriously), so the news that he'll be releasing a new album is no small deal for me. Expect frequent updates on this blog. By the way, "guedin" means crazy, which sums up this track nicely.

Dubstep LA - Embrace the Renaissance vol. 1

Just in case anybody missed it, some of the West Coast's finest MCs colaborated recently with some very big names in UK dubstep, the results of which were released last week mixed by Plastician, available for free download here. Notable contributors include Snoop, Ras Kass, Murs, Exhibit, and Eve, with production from the likes of Chase and Status, Joker, Benga and many more. Some will say it doesn't quite add up to the sum of its parts, but still some certified bangers on here.

Consequence Album Launch

a good friend of mine is dropping a album, check the mix link at the bottom

"This extremely talented and relatively new producer is turning the heads of some of the drum & bass scene’s most respected DJ's and label owners. His music is getting serious support from dBridge & Instra:mental, featuring on their Autonomic Podcasts, and also on Goldie’s Metalheadz pod cast # 5 which attracted over 50,000 downloads.

Cam McLaren aka Consequence was originally born in Toronto, Canada. Early on in life he moved to New Zealand, this is where he found his love of music. Early childhood experiments with a variety of instruments led to his love of composition and melody. Utilizing these elements in his current productions has given great variety in his sound and methods. At the age of 17 he decided to leave NZ for London where he pursued a career in music and played in a band as lead guitarist, performing in a number of successful live shows which led to record deal for the band. During a number of recording sessions at the Olympic studios (world famous for recordings of Jimi Hendrix/Led Zeplin) he developed an interest in audio engineering and decided to move back to NZ to study this profession. He became focused on Electronic production, specifically drum and bass. In this time he honed his skills and took influence from his previous musical experiences.

In early 2009 he was given the prestigious task of creating an album for Exit Records. He has risen to the challenge without even breaking a sweat (well maybe a little) and the debut LP is due for release in October. Come to the exclusive launch party presented by Polaroid to hear, for the first time, what is sure to become one of the most talked about albums in drum & bass worldwide.

I aimed to create music that doesn’t fit the usual mould of Drum and Bass, yet has its ties and influences from it. When listening to the LP in its entirety, I hope that listeners will be given an insight into the way I see my surroundings. Maybe people can relate, everyone shares certain similarities in the way they feel about their life and what makes them feel certain emotions. Consequence 09"

Tire la chasse -- Titine Boy

This is being toted as French grime even though it's already sounding pretty far removed. I know this guy has done a lot of work with Grime Sin, the only French grime crew I'm aware of, so I guess you'd have to call it grime. Whatever it is, I like it. Myspace here, and search this blog for more stuff by this lot.

DUBSTEP ARTICLE FRM THE GUARDIAN

The Guardian, Friday 12 June 2009

Dubstep and grime, the two wayward children of UK garage, have grown up. Dubstep is the globetrotting student, stamping its imprint everywhere from Chile to Australia, hanging out with Snoop Dogg in LA and at warehouse parties in eastern Europe. Grime, always the more promising child, has developed a split personality: sometimes phenomenally popular and happy-go-lucky (as with Tinchy Stryder, Wiley and Dizzee Rascal's electro-pop chart successes), but the rest of the time moody, introverted and defiantly self-sufficient. All that unites these estranged siblings now is their DNA. They come from the same place - the estates and pirate radio stations of London - and you can still see some family resemblance in their heavy basslines and their beats per minute, always around 140. But, if not exactly estranged, they are no longer close.

More importantly, what both dubstep and grime lack is the thing most prized in British dance music: novelty. In the streets and clubs, there is always talk of who's "pushing things forward", who's "going on differently". With the sounds of dubstep and grime firmly established, the search for the next big thing has turned once again to Bristol, the launching ground for the likes of Roni Size and his crew Reprazent, Tricky, Portishead, Massive Attack and more.

Today, three of the brightest hopes of the new Bristol sound are sitting in a beer garden, humming Sonic the Hedgehog and Street Fighter game themes, and downing cranberry sambucas. This is not how one imagines the future of British dance music. The three are 21-year-old Guy "Guido" Middleton, 23-year-old Jemal "Gemmy" Philips, and a third man, 20 years old, who leans in and gives his full name slowly and carefully to the dictaphone as "Joker ... Joker".

Racionais MCs - Brazilian Hip Hop

A crew from the favelas of Sau Paulo, who rap about police brutality, racism, poverty & crime. They also speak out for the black minority of Brazil, have worked with the Ministry of Education to develop ARAPensado e Educação (loosely translated as "The Rap Thinking and Education) program, and have done numerous benefit gigs to fund health clinics, youth sports programs, and samba schools. I'm still working my way through their exstensive back catalogue but wanted to give you a little taste.

Much respect to Siren for the tip off.

Wind It Up - Mark Pritchard

New booty-shakin club anthem from Sydney-based Mark Pritchard, released on Kode9's legendary Hyperdub label. If you like what you hear then buy the track at boomkat here, or come and show some love at Sydney's Index and Void nights, where Mark is a regular fixture on the bill (and where I first heard this track, details on those nights here).

Aquatic Lab Album

Aquatic Lab Sessions Vol 1

Aquatic Lab Sessions Vol 1 is a diverse package consisting of a selection of Aquatic Lab’s vinyl catalogue combined with previously unreleased material.

The compilation is constructed to be a collection of flowing styles, capturing everything from deep atmospheric textures to some serious sub rocking big rig material. The CD album features debut Aquatic Lab release by Caspa & Rusko ‘King George’,’ Colditz’ by UK Garage legend Zed Bias, ‘Nah Go Dung Deh’ by grime/dubstep star Cotti and ‘The Darkness’ & ‘Dark Passenger’ by acclaimed producer Seven.

First up is a chilling future-scape progression titled ‘Ankoku Butoh’ by Moving Ninja; an organic journey that is unique in every possible way. Further on, the album showcases a wealth of underground sounds from the purist hard stepper ‘Wasps’ by P-Vans, to the dub inspired rhythmic 2-Step roller ‘Hollandia’, produced by Spherix. New York based Australian producer Flash brings forth a hollowed out 4/4 dread bass long player in the form of ‘Right Here’ and Kila Mega Giga Tera, a live group consisting of Distro & Dub FX, deliver a kick-stepping, hard skanking piece of kit entitled ‘Subsonic’. Vista comes with a sub shaking hybrid of moody minimalism in the shape of Neptune, and to round off the installment, bass scientist Twitch culminates the release with an original piece of wobble bass that is brimming with character and primed for the dance floor.

Dutty Grind

Hey everyone, I know I've been a little quiet of late - the ocean called and I've been far away in a dream. Came home with a handful of ridiculous ragga/hip hop/dancehall/reggae tracks in Spanish, Portughuese & French. Trying to find them online so I can share with you all.

In the meantime if you wanna get a taste, I'm playing at Southpaw tomorrow night (before I scoot down to Nine High!!!) with the boys from Renegade Sound, so drop by if ya feel it.
